HMS Naiad 1/96th scale
Click on the gallery to see more pictures of HMS Naiad or play the video above. There have been four Royal Naval vessels to bear the name NAIAD, the first being commissioned in 1798. Naiad's are the daughters of Zen's, the fair, young woodland water nymphs of Greek mythology. The model that Steven is building here is based on the Dido class light Cruiser, which was sunk in the eastern Mediterranean near Egypt by a German U-Boat in 1942. Anti Aircraft cruiser DIDO class (HMS Naiad), launched 03.02.1939 completed 24.07.1940, this model has been built circa 1941 after refit trialling heavy armourments (inventory to follow), which were carried for only six months due to weight issues at the time. Details of HMS Naiad will grow with the construction of this model boat, presently this model boat is fitted out to superstructure level, this to include running gear (four brass prototubes 2x 8inch outbored and 2x 6inch inbored) all four motor mounts inline ready for installation of radio gear (to follow). Deck and superstructures I am currently going through the process of installation of all the ships doors and funnel vents, each door comprises of a brass etched frame, doorset and watertight handle (inside fixed) this allowing for all doors to be shown open so that additional detail can be added for internal viewing (this will follow during the build process). HMS Naiad will be fully operational with all four propellers and twin independant controls.
